Who is it suitable for?

This tool is about how to cope with obsessive thoughts (ruminating and worrying). Obsessive thoughts are a common problem in several mental disorders, as well as in other stressors such as chronic illness or pain. The tool is therefore not aimed at a specific diagnosis, but may be relevant for several different conditions where obsessive thoughts are part of the problem.

What does the coping tool contain?

The tool provides you with insights and techniques for dealing with obsessive thoughts – recurring worries or ruminations that drain energy and focus. It consists of six parts:

  1. Introduction
You will learn what obsessive thoughts are, how they arise, and why it is more helpful to face them with mindfulness than to try to suppress them. The goal is to create more calm and presence in everyday life.
  2. Understand
You will gain insight into how obsessive thoughts affect attention, and how you can practice accepting them while simultaneously directing your focus to what is actually happening here and now.
  3. Techniques
You will learn specific methods such as worry time, worry-free zones, and using the worry tree. You will also receive tools for systematic problem solving and strategies for creating distance from your thoughts.
  4. Changes
You use "if-then" rules to break automatic patterns and take back control. You learn how to prevent rumination from affecting close relationships, and how to adjust thinking habits in practice.
  5. Feelings
You will explore how negative emotions and obsessive thoughts are connected, and how you can increase awareness and acceptance of your emotions. Positive experiences and presence strengthen resilience.
  6. Prevention
You summarize what you have learned and create a plan to maintain the change. You are supported to manage setbacks and maintain good habits over time – with help from the toolbox.
