HEALTH ANXIETY

  • Techniques for coping with excessive health anxiety
  • 6 parts, control your own pace
  • For mobile, tablet or computer
  • Developed by a doctor/psychiatrist

A little health anxiety is normal and leads us to seek healthcare when we should or to keep a physical distance and wash our hands extra well during the corona pandemic. It can also lead to us living a fairly healthy life. We have many emotions, and most of them are warning lights, that is, they are intended to protect us from dangers and accidents, and help us if disasters occur. Anxiety is one of our emotions, and the anxiety reaction is a friend in need. We wouldn't be able to do without it. However, it can be exaggerated. Then it becomes an enemy. Many people then experience anxiety as an invisible prison. In this tool, the user will be given space to reflect on their own health and anxiety, and techniques and tasks that can reduce anxiety.

The tool was created by hypochondrologist Ingvard Wilhelmsen.

Who is it suitable for?

This tool is for people who experience that their health anxiety is so strong that it causes problems for their lives. It largely follows the progression that author Ingvard Wilhelmsen uses in conversations with patients at the Hypochondriasis Clinic in Bergen.

What does the coping tool contain?

The tool provides you with insights and tools to understand and manage health anxiety. It consists of six parts:

  1. Health anxiety
You learn what health anxiety is – a natural worry that can grow and create unnecessary fear. You practice distinguishing between useful and useless health anxiety, letting thoughts come and go, and trusting that you have been sufficiently investigated for the time being. Before challenging situations you have avoided, you map out which symptoms and fears are driving the anxiety.
  2. My project
You explore what drives your health anxiety – often a desire to control the uncontrollable, like illness and death. You see how life experiences and past events may have affected you, and learn to choose attitudes and life projects that help you move forward, instead of being trapped in fear and victimhood.
  3. Worry
You will learn how rumination and attempts to control uncertainty often increase anxiety. Common thoughts such as «I need to be prepared,» «worry protects me,» and «I can’t handle serious events» are challenged. You will be given tools to make less room for useless worry and free up energy for what you can influence.
  4. Mind
You practice facing catastrophic thoughts and bodily signals without letting them control you. You learn to accept that thoughts come and go, without seeking complete safety. You reduce body monitoring and practice interpreting common symptoms more realistically – and acting as if you are healthy.
  5. Choice
You practice distinguishing between what can and cannot be controlled. You choose to live by attitudes that support security and quality of life, instead of chasing impossible security. Exposure is used to face situations you have previously avoided, and gradually reduce anxiety.
  6. Forward
You summarize what you have learned and see how attitudes towards worry, thoughts and body signals are connected. You are supported to take small, targeted steps, face relapses with patience and continue to act in line with your new attitudes for lasting change.

It was very clear and easy to understand. Nice variation between reading, seeing/hearing and doing.»

«"Very good clarification regarding the type of anxiety one has, this was very well described. I used to think I had panic disorder, but I have learned that it is social anxiety."»

«"It was so GOOD to sit and read! I didn't feel so weird anymore, the online course normalized me.".

«"Liked that it's educational, in a way that makes the basic knowledge behind anxiety easy to understand. Also like the warm words along the way."»

«"An understanding of how the "whole" is connected. A tool for help. I think it all worked very well, and I am very happy with the knowledge I have gained from it. The course gives me room to reflect on the "complex" that I have not previously done. Now it is beginning and I am well on my way in the right direction. Many thanks for the great help and a tool for the rest of my life!!!"«

«"Liked that it was explained simply. Enjoyed watching the videos."»
