Who is it suitable for?

The tool is suitable for relatives over the age of 16 who have a close relationship with someone with mental illness, somatic illness or challenges related to substance abuse and addiction. It is designed to provide support, insight and practical tools for those who want to look after both themselves and the person you are a relative of.

What does the coping tool contain?

The tool provides support, knowledge and exercises for those of you who are relatives of someone with mental health challenges, substance abuse or serious illness. It consists of six parts:

  1. Being a relative
You will learn what it means to be a caregiver and how the role can affect your own health. You will be given tools to meet basic needs, manage concerns through SOAL and reflection, and support children who are caregivers.
  2. Reactions
You will gain insight into common emotions such as sadness, guilt and shame, and how they affect you. You will learn about stress, the tolerance window and how emotions can be understood as important signals.
  3. Self-care
You practice taking care of yourself through boundary setting, breathing exercises, and filling your energy tank. You learn to do things you enjoy and to sort worries so that they become more manageable.
  4. Borders
You will gain knowledge about why boundaries are important and how they protect against stress. With the HUS technique, you will practice communicating clearly, and you will reflect on your own rights and needs in relationships.
  5. Self-compassion
You learn to meet yourself with understanding and kindness rather than criticism. Through exercises, mindfulness, and writing self-compassionate letters, you practice handling stress and difficult emotions in a more supportive way.
  6. Summary
You look back on what you have learned and create a plan to prevent relapse and take care of yourself over time. The toolbox provides support to continue developing good skills and strategies in everyday life.

«"An understanding of how the "whole" is connected. A tool for help. I think it all worked very well, and I am very happy with the knowledge I have gained from it. The course gives me room to reflect on the "complex" that I have not previously done. Now it is beginning and I am well on my way in the right direction. Many thanks for the great help and a tool for the rest of my life!!!"«
